I recently did a powerpoint presentation for a friend of mine on the growth of Internet radio. While we were gathering the material, I suddenly came to realize that there are more Internet radio devices for sale now than ever before. In fact, far more than HD radio, the great programming 'innovation' that terrestial radio is touting!
Not only are there more radios available, but far more programming choices for the average listener than regular radio could provide. Broadcast radio folks believe that "local" is the key to success, so what would prevent 'local' internet radio stations from popping up that offer news, weather, traffic and community affairs?
Niche programming is already here on the net, with Wi-Fi penetration just now getting into cars there will no doubt be some great programming opportunities for local communities to spark up some really smart, meaningful programming.
Thanks to Bridge Ratings for the cool graph!

See, the interesting thing will be the wi-fi access to the car. Currently, muni-mesh of wi-fi has failed to expand.. not too comprehensive in distribution. So the next thing will be the 4G network. Once that comes to play, the whole application side of Internet radio will explode. 4G will be offered on the cellular networks and they are well covered on Interstates (outside the city grids). So, then mobile Internet radio (like current day satellite radio consoles) will disrupt the old market. And, the smaller players will bypass the incumbents (Sirius) by hosting their stations on the web service. It could be a potential free-for-all broadcasting opportunity. Google will then jump into it with its own ad engines for marquee (at the bottom of the display) advertising revenue, which in turn will feed these amateur stations.
Internet mobile radio replacing current car radio consoles is the thing of very evry immediate future.
Next will come programming... totally customized radio broadcast - you will decide what you want to hear. This model will emerge faster than pay-per-view or online TV since it will be in the low-end (budget regime) of the spectrum and will have lesser barrier of entry!
